The Tween Struggle is Real

When we found out we were having a girl, we were obviously both excited. But I can tell you one thing, I DEFINITELY didn’t anticipate that this crap might happen to me one day.

She’s crying because Zayn Malik is leaving the boy band One Direction. You’d think someone died in her family!

This. This is the crap I did not anticipate.

Now, this assumes that Isabel will be interested in this kind of stuff when she’s a tween, but I’m honestly not sure I would be able to handle this kind of situation without laughing.

I shared some awesome responses from dads of grieving daughters over on the Forty Weeks Later Facebook page. And I can easily see myself reacting the same way, I mean, it’s just too easy.

But this got me thinking. What other “situations” like this might I have to deal with as a dad (and not just of a daughter, as I’m sure there are sons reacting the same way)? There will be real heartbreak, loss, and disappointment. She will get frustrated, as she already does. And she will inevitably struggle with something, maybe even many things.

I can only hope that I am able to support her and give her the guidance she seeks, be her patience when she has none, her voice when she loses hers, and her solid ground when she’s treading water.
