Babies as Book Characters

I remember my dad always reading novels to me for bedtime, often only getting a few pages read before either of us fell asleep. I can’t tell you all the books he read, but I do remember that this was always our time – whether or not I appreciated it.

Over the past few months I have been reading to Isabel as much as possible (although probably not enough). Mrs. FWL and both grandmas are teachers, so she has a huge bookshelf packed with books. Most of the books are foreign to me, but apparently many are children’s classics. Thus, whenever I start reading a book, or find one on the shelf that I’ve never heard of (or simply don’t remember), Mrs. FWL inevitably expresses her surprise.

However, I look at it as a cool father/daughter moment as we both read the book for the first time. And so when I stumbled upon these pics of babies portrayed as book characters the other day, they reminded me of the many literary moments Isabel and I will create in the years to come. Let’s just hope she enjoys reading as much as her mama!

That is so cute!! Since our daughter has agreed to a routine (lol) we started to read at least three short books a night. One of the books she has memorized is a booked called, I Love My Mami, about Dora and her mom. Instead of me reading the book, she will take the book and “read” it to me. As a child, my mother always had tons of books for us in the house. She even drew our favorite book characters on our wall. Since our daughter has shown an interest in books, we try to find books on all subjects from Butterflies to Monkeys. The cool thing is that when we go on walks and she sees a nest or butterfly, she will recall a certain detail from what we have read. It is truly amazing to see how they start to connect books to real life situations.

  2. Awesome! I’m sure there is some comprehension going on with our daughter, but I think she just really enjoys hearing my voice, and I’m OK with that. 🙂

And you are building her vocabulary. I was an Elementary School Teacher in my former life and we always encouraged parents to read with their children; and not just read assigned work, but books they could enjoy. I would have these little book bags with books and an activity for children who needed a little extra help. But it really starts with a parent’s love of books and reading and that is awesome that you have a library in your home.

  4. Just one of the many benefits of being surrounded by current and former teachers! Both grandmas and my wife were elementary and my wife has transitioned into HS..at our old HS actually!

While I was interning for my Master’s I actually taught a class with my mom who was a Teacher’s Assistant for 30 years in Connecticut. I had gone to the Elementary School were she worked for Pre-K and K. So cool to go and teach where one was taught.

  6. Those pictures crack me up.

  7. I just went back and looked at these. Charlie and the Chocolate factory is awesome!
