dad blog baby 2 month update

2 Month Update

The first month as a dad was like being dropped into a foreign country without any preparation (not that I would know anything about that).

We had a new language to decipher (crying), new survival techniques to learn (“How much sleep do I really need?”), and new identities to navigate. But we also had the greatest gift ever.

Month two was about forming habits. A bed-time routine was created and Isabel is now sleeping 8-10 hours a night, she has found a new “appreciation” for her swing and can spend hours relaxing, sleeping, or just staring, and she has begun to develop a personality. She has started communicating in other ways than screaming (but she definitely still screams), showing emotions other than a blank stare, and is starting to figure out her likes and dislikes (as much as a 10 week old can).

Month two was also about becoming more confident as a dad. Her crying is less painful, her needs are more predictable, and our bond has strengthened. She may not sleep on me as much, but her smiles and coos more than make up for it (which makes not engaging her at her 4am diaper change so as to not stimulate her pretty tough). And my bag o’ tricks has expanded as I adapt to her changing needs.

Another phase has passed and month three has already begun. She is bigger, stronger, and more alert than before. Now, if you’ll excuse me, it’s time for tummy time.
